LABORATORY  SERVICES

The ERS Biological Laboratory is located in the Denver, Colorado area. We offer analyses for benthic invertebrates, periphyton, zooplankton, phytoplankton, chlorophyll-a, and water quality. We also offer identification services for larval fish, zebra mussel (and others) veligers, aquatic and terrestrial plants, and terrestrial insects.Type your paragraph here.

We apply a strict and comprehensive quality assurance program to ensure production of reliable and defensible biological data. Our analysis methods are scientifically accepted and are adapted from the American Public Health Association, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the U.S. Geological Survey. Our staff has processed and analyzed numerous biological samples from lotic, lentic and terrestrial environments throughout North America.

In addition to sample preparation and analysis, we perform complete biostatistical evaluations for laboratory generated data. We also remain available for client consultation should interpretation of results be necessary.

Our laboratory is equipped with state of the art equipment for completing numerous analyses. Some of the laboratory services we offer include:


  • Macroinvertebrate identification and quantification (including biomass; voucher collection optional)
  • Rapid bioassessment of macroinvertebrates (including EPA and regional protocols)
  • Periphyton and phytoplankton identification and quantification (including ash free dry weight)
  • Zooplankton identification and quantification (including biovolume)
  • Chlorophyll-a analysis (also with pheophytin)
  • Standard inorganic water quality analyses
  • Larval fish identification and enumeration
  • Freshwater mussel identification (including invasive species adults and veligers)
  • Sample processing of fish bony parts for age and growth analyses
  • Fish stomach contents identification and quantification
  • Fish / macroinvertebrate tissue analyses (e.g., heavy metals and pesticides)
  • Fish necropsy analysis
  • Terrestrial flora identification and voucher collections
  • Terrestrial insect identification
  • Amphibian, reptile, bird and mammal stomach contents identification and quantification
  • Complete scientific voucher collections
